Representatives from STOBER recently attended Women in Manufacturing events hosted by Maysville Community and Technical College.  More than 170 students attended the second annual event, which allowed females the opportunity to learn more about the roles women can have in manufacturing.

Women typically make up about 47% of the work force in the U.S.  As companies grow there is a need to have more women fill these new positions.  STOBER was invited to participate and sent some representatives to attend and talk about their role and the opportunities that STOBER has for apprentices.

“We are appreciative of the partnerships with local and surrounding manufacturers and community workforce resources,” said De’Sarae Perry, MCTC Director of Workforce Solutions.  “Because of their dedication and support in this initiative, we were able to see a spark of interest in many of the young ladies.”

Joey Hiatt, STOBER apprentice coordinator, and Marshall Bertram, STOBER machinist instructor, spoke during the event about STOBER’s apprenticeship program, how STOBER is working ahead to fill projected job vacancies, and the importance of having women fill these roles.

“Women in Manufacturing educates and exposes our young female students to other career pathways that they never imagined through hands-on activities, classes about companies and demonstrations, “ said Perry.

Angela Dolejs, inside sales specialist, and Hannah Kane, STEM apprentice, took time to speak their roles at STOBER and the benefits of being an apprentice.  STOBER representatives shared with the group some specifics of how an apprenticeship can be beneficial to both the apprentice and the company.

“I feel like this is a great opportunity for females to explore different pathways in a manufacturing setting and be exposed to career fields that they may not have thought of,” Cindy Hurt, MCTC workforce development liaison said. “It is also a great way to help our manufacturers connect with local students, network and recruit future students for MCTC!”
